Why do I not get surround sound when using my directv hd dvr receiver?
I just hooked up my dvd player (to my yamaha 5.1 receiver via digital coaxial cable) and my directv hd dvr receiver (to my yamaha 5.1 receiver via digital optical cable). When I use the dvd player I get sound from all speakers (front r, l rear r, l center and subwoofer. When I use my directv receiver I only get sound from the front 2 speakers. Is this because there aren't many broadcasts on television broadcasting in 5.1 or am I missing something with my settings? There doesn't seem to be anything on the directv receiver settings that would allow or disallow 5.1. The only setting is dolby on or off. I have tried it both ways. Many thanks!

Yamaha's defaults to the coax being a CD PCM input so you need to look in the manual for how to change its configuration, and yes it is a pain. Optical will need configuration as well. You gave no model number so no step by step for you. Next you need to check your settings on the DirecTV receiver , these will be defaulted to 2 channel output even on digital coax. Next is the content, make sure you have a program that has 5.1 DD. Easy way is premium movie channels, most of these will have 5.1 content most of the time. Check all your manuals for just what you need to configure more than likely it is a settings issue or no content.

How do I autotune my Directv HD+DVR receiver to automatically switch channels to record?
I have a Directv HD+DVR receiver (model HR20) and whenever I set it to record a show it used to automatically change channels when that show started. Now it doesn't and it shows up as an unrecorded show because it didn't switch. Is there a way to automatically switch it to record?

Ok, first you cant set it to switch, I am sorry bout that. Second, if its not recording it you may have a tuner problem. First off I would reset it. If that doesnt work, call DTV, as for the tech dept. Have them run some test on it. You have 2 tuners and if it doesnt record something is wrong. If all else fails, you can have a tech look at it, or god forbid reformat it. Hope that helps!

How do I connect DirecTV HD DVR receiver to Panasonic Viera HD TV to Panasonic sound bar HC-HTB10 using HDMI?
Having big trouble understanding setup. Presently, DirecTV HD DVR receiver connected to TV's HDMI ARC port. TV has two HDMI ports - one ARC and one regular. Am not at all techy-oriented. Please help!

You would want to connect the DVR to the regular HDMI port. You should only use the ARC port with another ARC compatible device (usually high-end surround sound receivers). As far as your sound bar goes, I would recommend connecting it either to the TV's audio output or the DVR's audio output. Both the TV and DVR should have optical audio outputs which would give you the best sound quality when connected to your sound bar's optical audio input. Below is a link explaining how the new HDMI 1.4 with ARC works, so you'll understand it. Hope this helps. http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/content/info/1277329071738

Currently I have a Directv hd receiver, Can I replace it with a hd dvr receiver?
Basically, I want to buy an hd dvr receiver from a friend and not go through DirectV because they are charging too much to sell their HD DVR Receiver with fees, installations, etc.... Also In addition, all I would have to do is pay for the dvr service?

yes its possible. now the next steps: 1. is your friend currently using the hd dvr? meaning does he have an active account with directv and the hd dvr is part of his account? if it is, he needs to contact dtv first and deactivate that receiver. 2. you have to call dtv and order a new access card for the receiver. its also for your own protection. because if there are unbilled pay per views on the original access card, they will get charged to you. 3. if the hd dvr will be a replacement, you need to call dtv and deactivate your hd receiver. because if you won't, your hd receiver will be counted as an additional receiver in your account ($4.99). anyways, once your hd is deactivated, the new charge on your bill will only be the dvr charge of $5.99/month
